UPS Installation Safety Requirements White Paper

Connecting a large three-phase UPS is hazardous, and data center engineers need to protect themselves and others from high voltages and power.

When installing a UPS, it’s important to know how backfeed protection can be applied to distributed and centralized multiple UPS configurations, while maintaining the same levels of safety, system redundancy and availability. It’s equally important to understand the international IEC standards, which require UPS manufacturers to declare either a rate short-time withstand current or a rated conditional short-circuit current for the UPS. If the data center uses external short-circuit protective devices, then responsibility for the overall system safety transfers to the users, who may not have the necessary technical and legislative knowledge. These problems can be avoided by using a UPS with built-in protection.
